Second Bite of the Cherry

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!

UPDATED 02-03-2022 You know what I’m going to go at this from two directions, I’m going to point out 2 different ways that people are getting a #SecondBiteOfTheCherry not just the original one I published yesterday...

Firstly….

This #FakeNews seems to be a hybrid combination of classics tactics that have been pointed out in blogs such as #CopyPaste and #SlowNewsDay but instead of the tabloids playing the card it is the actual ‘celebrity’ using the above tactic themselves with a hint of #ThrowbackPictures thrown in to the mix.

Either the ‘celeb’ has recently come back from a trip and has realised that a certain story / image has had a spike in interest or they have not done anything of note in the last week so want to re-use the image to keep content flowing on their feed (or a bit of both).

A classic example, Megan Barton-Hanson

A Love Island contestant who went in to the 2018 series under headlines including “is a fan of extreme fetish parties” and has had 126 subsequent posts, and counting, on www.LetsCallBull.com since.  She has become one of, if not the, most successful contestant ever and has managed to reinvent herself and keep the tabloids salivating ever since.

In this instance she had just returned from a holiday in Morocco that was covered both on her Insta and in the tabloids to within every inch of its life with a particular image getting between 2-4 times her normal number of likes. https://bit.ly/3IDq8eb

Realising she is now back off holiday and has no new content ready to push out this image is then released https://bit.ly/3IFzvKA with the comment “Had to post another just to do this bikini justice”.

You could almost play spot the difference! Within 24 hours this picture has 1/3 more likes than the last bite of the cherry and becomes her most liked image on #Instagram of the year to date.

So, what have we learnt here?

1) Sex sells, as the second image is slightly more revealing and got more likes

2) This is an #AD even though it doesn’t declare it so she is making good money out of it (again)

3) Watching ‘the numbers’ and picking the right image makes all the difference to ‘likes’

4) It takes maybe a week to get the #Photoshop work done after the event????

Any way you look at it it’s money for old rope and a quadruple win for the ‘celeb’ they get likes, another paid advert, more followers and the tabloids lap it up.

So that is the first bite of the cherry but there is also another element using the old 2 bites tactic which brings me on to...

Secondly….

How can you get maximum exposure for the launch of a TV show or ‘product X’?  Well if you are Hulu (a streaming service) and you are reviving an old TV show like Futurama how about leaking the show is coming back but one of the main actors (John DiMaggio) is not returning so there is an apparent public outroar about it...

That will be the first bite that at the time was pointed out by ‘Callers’ as “probably started by DiMaggio to strengthen his negotiation stance with Hulu” and that it “Smacks of Hulu putting this out there to get the free press for the show”

The second bite came precisely 20 days later with the triumphant news...

So, from “problem A” being leaked for the free headlines “solution B” is published at a later date to not only quell the ‘outrage’ but get more free headlines for the show.

A pretty transparent bit of manipulation that once you step back from the day-to-day press releases and tabloid ‘rage’ becomes easy to see.

So, to wrap this blog up, it would appear that for some the “Second Bite Of The Cherry” is indeed the sweetest so expect to see this becoming more the norm going forward
