When it looks too good to believe, it probably is!
You hear a lot in the press about a photo being #Photoshopped, and more to the point you DON’T hear about some photos that have been photoshopped as it used to be a dirty little secret, but not anymore.
So what does Photoshopped mean, it has become the industry term for altering an image (or even a video) to change the appearance and make it ‘better’. It relates to a piece of really impressive image editing software that is used by professionals to create and alter pictures.
A classic example would be of a Celebrity picture; before it is ‘officially’ published it will either be professionally re-touched or have filters applied via an app to remove imperfections in their skin and hair, like the one below
This has become the norm for what seems like 99% of celebrity images on the internet unless they are leaked via a 3rd party or the individual is making a point that the picture is genuine.
So what’s the harm? Well the issue is that this is creating a false sense of reality and expectation for a whole generation that are growing up and actually believing that the ‘perfect’ image is how they are supposed to look, or can look if they buy a certain beauty product or follow a certain health and fitness regime. And let’s be honest even these celebrities who are promoting them don’t look like it with their millions of dollars and personal trainers so what chance have we got?
So next time you look at a photo and are marvelling at how great someone looks and feel a pang of self-doubt just think, is it actually real because no one’s perfect not even the celebs.
