The Conservatives have lost control of key London councils in English local elections, but Labour has so far made fairly modest gains elsewhere.

The Lib Dems have made progress in Tory areas and took Hull City Council from Labour, in a good night for the party.

With just under half the results in, the Tories are on track to lose about 250 seats across England, according to polling expert Sir John Curtice.

The counts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland get under way later.

The full results of those elections, as well those for mayoral contests, will come later on Friday and on Saturday.

I Call True: No real shock that the Tories have been losing seats as they have been shameful and people have had enough of them

I'm surprised that the other parties didn't do better out of this

Given the state of the country and the amount of bad feeling that there is towards the Tories, this is a pretty poor showing from Labour. The low turnout also shows total apathy towards all of the political classes.

Slightly worrying about the Greens gaining traction. Haven't we all had enough of 25% extra on our energy bills and bonkers policies to further blight our lives?

Easy true. The Tories have lied and lied, if i was to start listing it all i'd be here all week, needless to say the public have had enough and are now, at last doing the right thing. Shame it isn't a national election though.

The Green party have made some serious inroads whilst Labour have not really managed to capitalise of the Conservatives poor showing
