Chancellor Rishi Sunak has hinted he could provide more help for households struggling with soaring living costs, promising: "We will get through this."

He has announced a £400 discount on all energy bills, part-funded by a windfall tax on oil and gas company profits.

The BBC understands the cabinet is split over the tax, amid fears it will stifle investment and economic growth.

But Mr Sunak said he continued to be "prepared to respond to the situation on the ground".

I Call Bull: An absolute whitewash to hide all of the Tory rule breaking and nowhere near enough. Ok I appreciate national debt is a 2.3 trillion right now (slow clap for Covid) but there needs to be a cap on the price that energy companies can charge full stop as that £400 is not even 2 months fuel for most people
